some winters are private. katalin karikó's was institutional — conducted in writing, in rejection letters and demotion notices, over about twenty-five years. what makes her story worth reading from inside your own long season isn't the ending, though the ending is absurdly good. it's how ordinary the middle was: year after year of no, with no sign whatsoever that a yes was coming.
she grew up in kisújszállás, hungary, and became a biochemist. in 1985 her lab at the biological research centre lost its funding, and she, her husband béla and their two-year-old daughter susan decided to emigrate. hungarian currency controls meant they could take almost nothing out legally — so they sold their car on the black market and sewed the money into susan's teddy bear before crossing the border. (the exact amount is reported differently by different sources. the teddy bear is not in dispute.) a family starting over with their savings inside a stuffed animal.
from 1989 she was at the university of pennsylvania, working on messenger rna — the idea that synthetic mrna could instruct cells to make their own therapeutic proteins. the field's consensus was that it would never work: synthetic mrna triggered dangerous immune reactions and degraded too fast. her first mrna grant proposal went in 1990. the rejections came back, and kept coming, for years.
