Pert gives this path its lab coat. Everyone else here found the body's role in feeling through hands, movement, and therapy rooms. Pert found it under a microscope — and she found it first as a twenty-six-year-old graduate student.

In 1972, at Johns Hopkins, she ran the experiments that pinned down the opiate receptor: the exact molecular lock on our cells that opiates — and, it soon turned out, the body's own morphine-like chemicals, the endorphins — fit into. It was a landmark discovery, the kind careers are built on. When the credit flowed toward the senior men around her, she did something almost unheard of for a junior scientist at the time: she objected, publicly. It cost her, and it freed her. She stopped waiting for permission for the rest of her career.

The receptor was just the beginning. Over the following two decades, working at the National Institute of Mental Health, Pert helped map what became an astonishing picture: the body is saturated with receptors for the chemicals of emotion — the peptides that carry mood, stress, craving, calm. And they are everywhere. On immune cells. Lining the gut. In the heart. The brain, it turned out, doesn't have a monopoly on feeling. It has a very good seat in a much larger theater.

Her conclusion was the theme of her book Molecules of Emotion, and it reads like the thesis statement of this entire path: mind and body aren't two systems passing notes. They're one system — a bodymind — having one continuous chemical conversation. When your stomach drops at bad news, that's not your brain telling your gut a story. Your gut is in the room, hearing the news itself.

Which is why she loved saying the line this path could be named after: your body is your subconscious mind. The things you don't consciously process don't vanish — they're being handled, chemically, in tissue that never learned to talk.

Pert stayed controversial — in her later years she followed her ideas into territory her colleagues wouldn't, and not all of it held up. But her core finding sits underneath everyone else here like bedrock. When van der Kolk says the body keeps the score, Pert is the reason we know part of how.
